Before a Gamma scan (a type of nuclear medicine imaging), what you eat and drink can matter — but the rules vary depending on the exact type of scan you’re having. For many gamma scans, especially those of the abdomen, like gastric emptying or hepatobiliary studies, you’ll usually be asked not to eat or drink for several hours beforehand (often about 4–6 hours) to help the images come out clearly and accurately.

Plain water is sometimes allowed up until a few hours before the appointment, but things like meals, coffee, milk, or other drinks may need to be avoided if your care team tells you to fast.
Different procedures and facilities have slightly different prep instructions, so the most important guideline is to follow the specific directions given when you booked your scan.
